Aiden moved over toward the mass of huddled shadows where Porter, Ray, and Andy were looking at the map. Porter looked up. “How is he? Looks like he’s coming around.”

Aiden nodded. “He’ll be fine. He could use a rest but he says he can walk. What next?”

Porter and Andy went over the last communication from command: the previous landing zone was scrapped, as was the original one they had been heading for the day before when this circus had started. Both locations were deemed compromised and the brass didn’t want to risk sending more birds into locations that were already well sighted by the enemy.

Porter tried not to think about what went into that decision, and instead decided to focus on things he could control. He had no desire to move in the direction they’d been ambushed at yesterday; but he had also seen the A-10 completely destroy that area. This mountain was obviously crawling with bad guys who were either just climbing out of their winter dens or never retreated into them in the first place. America’s enemies were constantly adapting to her tactics— and getting harder to kill. But America was adapting as well, which is why some of its best men were currently in this place at this time.

Andy finally made up his mind. “It will take us at least three hours to get there, assuming it doesn’t get worse. This storm is bipolar.”

Several times the winds had stilled, the snow stopped, and the storm appeared to be clearing, only to have a gale-force wind kick up. The men stood ready for the next blast, getting colder, anxious, hungry, and pissed.

“Alright. Let’s move out in five,” Porter decided. He turned to Aiden, “We’ll move as slow as we can. We’ve got time to kill probably, and I don’t want to lose track of anybody on the way down. How are your men holding up?”

“Hundred percent. I’ll tell them we’re moving out.” He started to walk off when he heard Porter’s voice again.

“Gator owes you a beer, you know. Hell, I’ll buy you one, too.”

Aiden realized he was referring to the guy he’d killed. He hadn’t given the matter a second thought; he was solely concerned with Josiah. He reflected on it for a half-second, and then shelved it away forever. He looked at Porter and replied simply, “Alright,” and then turned.

Porter asked after him again, “You sure he can walk? We can carry him if we have to.”

Aiden turned again. “He’s tougher than he looks. He’s my brother. If he says he can walk, he will.” Gator and Porter watched in stunned silence as Aiden walked off.
